Surgical Services

The Department of Surgical Services consists of the Day Surgery Unit, Surgery, Post-Anesthetic Unit (PACU) and the Sterile Processing Department (SPD). It provides a wide variety of high-tech, competitive services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. The Surgery Department abounds with a "human touch" giving those it serves comfort and safety. The cornerstone of its success lies in its mission:

  • To provide accessible and competent healthcare services
  • To promote health and safety through education
  • To protect the dignity of all we serve
  • To progressively identify and respond to community needs

Surgery Department

The Surgery Department provides professional and skilled care to adults and children undergoing diagnostic and surgical procedures. The Operating Room is staffed 7 days a week, and 24 hours a day. Over 300 patients a month are cared for by the Surgery Department. The most modern surgical techniques and equipment available are used while still maintaining a very human touch with the patient.

The Surgery Department is truly multidisciplinary and is staffed by Registered Nurses, Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists, Certified Scrub Techs, Orthopedic Technicians and Assistants/Attendants. The function of Surgery at Crittenden Regional is to provide a standard of excellence in the care and safety of every patient who experiences surgical intervention.

Crittenden Regional's Surgery Department has six operating rooms. The types of surgery available cover all specialties and include: ENT, Pediatric Dentistry, ophthalmology, orthopedics, general surgery, cardiovascular, urology, plastics, neurology, gynecology, podiatry, diagnostic gastroenterology, cosmetic surgery and pain therapy.

Day Surgery

The Day Surgery Unit (DSU) consists of seventeen patient care rooms and provides professional hospital services on an outpatient basis. Skilled nursing care for adults and children is provided for both diagnostic and operative procedures. An average of 250 patients a month visit the Day Surgery Unit. The Unit admits patients requiring Chemotherapy, Surgical Procedures (general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics etc.) and diagnostic procedures (arteriogram, x-ray procedures, etc.).

The DSU is committed to Quality Improvement. The Unit's Patient Satisfaction Questionnaire always scores very highly in the areas of patient care. Important DSU aspects of care include: pre-admission instructions, patient comfort and safety, and health education.

Post-Anesthetic Unit (PACU)

The PACU provides professional and skilled care to adults and children recovering from diagnostic and surgical intervention performed in Surgery.

PACU works with the Department of Anesthesia and A. Soliman, MD is the Medical Director of the Anesthesia Department.

PACU is staffed 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. In line with the rest of the Department of Surgical Services, PACU uses the most high tech equipment available for the care of the patient, yet strives to maintain a human touch.

Sterile Processing Department

The Sterile Processing Department is responsible for the provision and maintenance of many patient supply items, including electronic equipment and all reusable sterile supplies. The most important function of SPD is to act as an excellent role model for infection control practices and to work as an infection control resource. The Department does this by providing information and working closely with the patient care units and the Infection Control Practitioner.

The Sterile Processing Department also uses the most modern and research based processes to provide sterilization of reusable goods. The majority of items are sterilized by high temperature and pressure steam. Sensitive and delicate items are sterilized using gas-plasma sterilization. Crittenden Regional Hospital was the first hospital in the Mid-South to purchase this environmentally safe system.

As the "backbone" on which Surgical Services relies, the Sterile Processing Department provides a safe and courteous service, and plays an integral part in the hospital. The department's staff has a strong commitment to Quality Improvement and rigorously monitors all it's functions. For instance, all reusable items sterilized by the department are tracked and can be proven to be sterile.
